â ELLEN JOHNSON SIRLEAF â
Have you heard of Liberia? Liberia is a country in Africa that was established by freed black people called Americo-Liberians. Not long ago, a brilliant and confident woman named Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who lived in Liberia, did something daring to help bring peace to her country. She did it because she wanted the Liberian people to have a bright future.
Years ago, in Liberia, a terrible civil war broke out that lasted for fourteen years. During that time, schools were shut downâso many children were not taught to read. It was a very dangerous time, and the people lived in fear for their lives.
Ellen decided to run for public office so that she would have the power to help the people of Liberia. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf ended up becoming the president of her country! Once elected president, she pushed for change and a better future.
Do you like going to school? Ellen wanted the children of Liberia to go to school again, too. She opened free schools for students at the elementary school level and she began enforcing laws to protect women and girls.
President Sirleaf was the first female head of state to ever be elected in Africa. She has a lot of support from the people who live there and has won the respect of people all over the world. She has even been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Nobel Peace Prize!
Children in Liberia are learning to read again. Liberians live happy and healthy lives, and the youngest students only know Liberia as a country that is fair and free. Thanks to President Sirleafâs hard work, the country is now a better and more peaceful place.
Have you ever wondered how you can make the world a better place?
Little things make a huge difference. Treat others with kindness every day. Help others whenever you can. When you do, you have exactly what it takes to make the world a better place. We are very grateful for you.
Did you know that immigrants named Liberia? âLiberiaâ means âLand of the Freeâ in Latin.
